“I did strive to really convey my artistry with the arrangements I did on the songs,” says Fredericks. “I mean, since I wasn’t doing my original songs, I wanted to feel like I was.” Back in 2015, millions watched as the farmboy from New York state bested all comers under the tutelage of coach Pharrell Williams. When we first heard Sawyer, I thought he was going to be like old, 50-60 year old man who'd been singing the blues for years and years. And he was 15 years old, a white boy with long hair from Upstate New York. There was no way to really wrap your head around it. So much so that every time he sang, you just stare at him like whoa. His debut was stuffed to the brim with high-profile producers such as Williams, Dan Romer and Mikal Blue and co-writers such as Foy Vance and Dave Bassett. I’m not exactly sure how Sawyer’s voice can simultaneously transport me back to cheery days of listening to A.M. Radio with the windows rolled down — and yet also manage to sound completely fresh and current, but a good magician never explains his tricks, I suppose. Will Sawyer be the first Voice winner whose weekly iTunes dominance will turn him into a household name? I wouldn’t bet against it. Back in the spring of 2015, captured the hearts (and votes) of fans. Well, the long-haired Upstate New York native is still singing up a storm and splitting time between his family's farm and working on his own music in the studio in Los Angeles — along with performing with former Voice co-stars Mia Z and Meghan Linsey. At a press event for The Voice's upcoming Season 9, coach Pharrell Williams revealed that he's working with — or at least has been in the studio with his former team member a bit. The singer and producer has been impressed with the mature work Fredericks has done so far.

Nevertheless, the song offers a somewhat weary world view: “My sun’s not coming up and my world has turned dark,” he sings. “I’m not actually writing from my actual life experiences, of course,” Fredericks says with a laugh. “But I create this scenario and try to feel what this person would be feeling to convey the emotions in my music.” While he’s not on tour, Fredericks continues to live on the family farm near Fullerton, New York, where he grew up and was home-schooled by his parents. He began playing guitar after his uncle showed him a few chords. By the age of 11 he was writing his own songs and by 12 was playing them at open-mike nights and busking at farmers’ markets.
